Medical Malpractice

Mistakes happen all the time to many people. When it occurs during the treatment of a health issue, it is called medical malpractice. There are many things that can cause this kind of mistake. This article discusses some of these causes and what you are able to do to prevent these problems from happening in the first place.

Some mistakes you can’t control. Those include things like mistakes the doctor might make or problems within the health care industry as a whole. There are many that you can control. Things you might not want to do because of either pride or fear are big issues. This also includes trying to do things that are dishonest.

Don’t let your pride keep you from reporting all the symptoms you have and all medicines you are taking, both prescription and over the counter. Many times the doctor can spot an issue within your medication and symptoms that most people would never notice. Pride also gets in the way when you try to diagnose yourself. Telling the doctor you have a certain illness and pressuring to be given specific medicines, like antibiotics, can backfire in a hurry when you are wrong about what is going on with your health.

Another thing you have to do is fight through your fears. Don’t worry about the doctor scolding you. Don’t be embarrassed about your lifestyle. Scolding is the worst that the doctor can do. Don’t let money problems keep you from following any treatment plans prescribed. The doctor might can provide samples of medication being prescribed and can check into clinical trials being conducted or other ways to cut the cost of those treatments. Always make sure to read all treatment instructions. Speak up if you don’t understand completely. The doctor will gladly go over them with you so that you know exactly what to do.

Dishonest and illegal behaviors are the final things that you can control. Health problems you might have could be missed if you don’t admit to having taken any illicit drugs. Making up symptoms that don’t exist can make your sicker when you take medicine that is not needed. Trying to get the doctor to prescribe restricted drugs like pain killers when you don’t need them can even get you thrown in jail. This is especially true if you are addicted, or even worse, trying to sell them to other addicts. This includes saying symptoms exist when they don’t just to defraud insurance companies or employers.

In conclusion, many things can cause mistakes to happen during medical treatment. Control what you can and it will go a long way towards preventing medical malpractice from happening. Be sure not to let your pride or your fears get in the way of taking care of yourself. Be honest about everything to do with your health. Pride, fears and dishonesty now will always lead to further problems down the road. If you keep from creating problems, the mistakes you can’t control are less likely to happen.
